American Illustrative Tattooing
"Bridging the Gap Between Traditional & Realism"
Russ Abbott learned most of what he knows about art through the eyes of a tattooer. Prior to his tattooing apprenticeship, he knew he could draw, but he never had much formal art training to help him develop a style. With over 10 years as a custom tattoo artist under his belt, Abbott has attempted just about every tattooing style & technique with varying degrees of success. His mantra all along was to learn from his mistakes and repeat his successes. Over time, Abbott's work has evolved into a realm all its own. Drawing from solid foundations in both traditional and realistic tattooing, he's been making a name for himself with his uniquely American brand of illustrative tattooing.
Abbott's tattoo creations are often strikingly vivid depictions of dramatic scenery. Even the most mundane objects seem to have a life all their own when Russ works his magic on them. The staples of his tattoo style include clean line work, dynamic composition, dramatic lighting, and realistic rendering. Many of the epic scenes depicted in his tattoo projects seem to spring to life from the pages of a classic novel.
During this seminar, Russ Abbott dives deep into his creative process, revealing hard-learned wisdom and offering useful advice for those wishing to take their work to the next level. Following is an overview of what will be covered. There will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions.
Consultation & Design: Learn techniques for molding your clients' concepts into the best tattoo ideas with a behind-the-scenes look into the planning process for large-scale tattoo projects.
Tattooing Techniques: Includes discussion on the techniques that Russ uses for stenciling & drawing directly on the skin, outlining & mapping out the piece, smooth shading & solid coloring, and getting that "clean" look. Find out what needles, machines, and inks Russ prefers. Every attendee will receive a secret list detailing which machines, needles, and inks Russ prefers as well as his unique color recipes and how to use them.
Style: Throughout the seminar, Russ will focus on how he uses illustrative elements like texture, lighting, shadow, and perspective to achieve clarity in complex compositions. Examples from Russ Abbott's own portfolio will be examined to show how he applies the fundamentals of traditional tattooing to realistic subjects. Seating is limited!
Saturday 12 pm - 2 pm

DAN HENK / NICK BAXTER SEMINAR
"Fundamentals of Realist Oil Painting"
Dan Henk and Nick Baxter will
present a hands-on oil painting seminar
Sunday at Hell City "Let it Bleed" in Killumbus, Ohio. The course
will be Sunday from 4pm - 7 pm and will cost $250. Due to time
restraints,
some basic knowledge of oil painting is encouraged. Although
recommended for at least the intermediary, anyone from a beginner to an
expert is welcome to participate. This is a learn at your own pace
seminar that includes everything
from a very brief overview on the basics of oil paint, to medium tricks
and even artistic rules and hints.
The seminar is basically broken into two parts.
Part 1-
involves a brief lecture on the medium and project at hand, followed by
a question and answer section. All of this is fairly short, and meant
to be more of a refresher course than an in depth introduction.
At the end of this portion, everyone will have a picture taken
with a Polaroid. The Polaroid can be of one's self, or any other easily
paintable scene suggested by the attendee.
Part 2 - involves each individual beginning an oil
painting of the subject in the photo. Nick Baxter and Dan Henk will
encompass the room, giving each individual encouragement and advice as
they work to complete their projects.
The goal is to help each attendee progress with the medium.
Paintings aren't necessarily expected to be finished in the 2 1/2 hour
seminar, but new techniques and approaches, as well as general art
advice, will be dispensed by Dan and Nick.
The approach is a bit akin to an art class, with a little more
hands on feel in regards to personal attention. The relatively short
time is taken into account, and hopefully everyone will leave with something new that advances his or her personal ability.
A canvas is provided, and basic art materials (10 tubes of oil
paint, five paint brushes, alkyd medium, terpenoid and a temporary
palette).
Individuals are encouraged to bring their own art supplies as well, if they have them.
Sunday 12 pm - 3 pm
Course Length: 3 hours
Cost: $250
Canvas provided as well as basic art materials
